The Kuantan Arts Festival (KuArts) has kicked off for the weekend and there’s plenty to do and see.
Showcasing creative works of Kuantan’s local artists and talents through various mediums at different locations around town, KuArts will be filled with film screenings, musical and theater performances, visual art exhibitons, projection mapping displays, and even a bazaar.
Each event that’s part of the wider festival is an expression of individual artists and creative teams of the east coast.
While it is possible to tick every event of the programme list, we’ve put together the ones we think you should definitely check out while you’re in Kuantan this weekend.
1. Pasar Sera
Pasar Sera is a marketplace that is a staple of KuArts Festival which will be running all weekend from 2pm to 11pm.
Being one of Kuantan’s beloved creative markets, Pasar Sera was born from humble beginnings at Sera Villa and has grown into a bazaar full of unique finds.
From passionate home-based makers to established brands, Pasar Sera brings together a vibrant mix of vendors for you to explore.
2. Projection mapping by filamen
Kuala Lumpur-based digital and new media art collective filamen specialises in projection mapping to transform entire buildings into an immersive creative display.
Founded in 2016, they also serve as a platform for emerging artists to explore and experiment at the intersection of art and technology.
Catch their IMMERSIOx display during KuArts at Blok56 on Jalan Teluk Sisek on 13 and 14 June at 11am.
3. Art exhibition: soft soft sands
A visual art exhibition curated by Low Pey Sien, soft soft sands gathers artists of different disciplines around Kuantan, the east coast, and what it means to look at a place carefully.
The exhibition will take place at Hock Bee Building and Belatuk Social on Jalan Besar, and Barn House on Jalan Teluk Sisek from 12 June to 12 July.
During KuArts, there will be a guided tour of soft soft sands at 5pm.
4. Film screening: Sometimes Feels Like Summer
Presented by House Your Film Collective, this short film screening is a captivating showcase exploring the rich tapestry of Malaysian identity, memory, and the spaces we call home.
Cigarettes and motorcycles have never been part of Alia’s life, but for Jaie, those two things are part of his identity. Growing up in cramped, chaotic rural flat, Alia has always chosen the safety of her quiet and sheltered routine. When she turns to Jaie for help in winning over a motorcyclist from her neighbourhood, she steps into an unfamiliar space—one where smoke and speed define the rules.
The film is directed by Ikram Haizammuri, a Malaysian independent filmmaker based in Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan.
Sometimes Feels Like Summer is open for bookings and will be screened at Studio Belatuk on 14 June.
5. Musical performances by The Impatient Sisters, Satwo, and more
What’s a festival without music? Catch some of the best music the east coast has to offer this weekend by bands like The Impatient Sisters, Yeast, Reverbs & Echoes, and husband-wife duo Satwo, as well as Petaling Jaya-based rock band Bruh.
There’s actually so much more to experience during the festival, including workshops, talks and discussions on the arts, and theatre performances.
