The Election Commission (EC) has officially set 11 July as polling day for the Johor state election and 1 August for the Negeri Sembilan state election, kicking off what is expected to be one of Malaysia’s biggest political contests this year.
According to a , the dates were announced following a special meeting today (12 June) after both state assemblies were dissolved earlier this month. Johor’s 56-seat state assembly was dissolved on 1 June, while Negeri Sembilan’s 36-seat assembly was dissolved on 5 June.
Nomination day for Johor is on 27 June, while Negeri Sembilan is on 18 July. This will give candidates and political parties about two weeks to prepare for their respective state’s campaigning.
Early voting for Johor is 7 July, and voting day is 11 July.
As for Negeri Sembilan, early voting is 28 July and voting day is 1 August.
In Johor alone, more than 2.7 million voters are eligible to cast their ballots, making it one of the largest state elections in the country. The EC is also expected to deploy thousands of election workers to ensure the smooth running of the polls.
The twin elections are expected to be closely watched as a gauge of public sentiment towards both the federal unity government and the opposition coalition ahead of the next general election.
With campaign season now officially around the corner, political parties are expected to ramp up their machinery as they battle for control of 92 state seats across Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
