The demolition of a four-storey apartment building in Hulu Langat allegedly occupied by the Rohingya community has already received approval and is now awaiting funding allocation from the Selangor government, according to Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan.

When contacted by VoxPop, Sany said the matter had long been brought to the attention of various authorities at the district, state and federal levels.

According to the Amanah lawmaker, demolition of the building cannot be carried out immediately as several legal procedures must first be complied with, including the procedure under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).

He added that the operation would involve multiple agencies and is estimated to cost close to RM600,000.

“The paperwork has already been submitted by the Land Office to the state government to obtain funding. Once the allocation is approved, demolition works will be carried out,” he said.

Sany also addressed the accusations that authorities had failed to act, saying complaints had been submitted repeatedly, including through Parliament, and discussions had also been held with the Inspector-General of Police and the National Security Council (NSC).

However, Sany stressed that the Rohingya issue differs from cases involving undocumented migrants from countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Vietnam, whose governments would generally accept their repatriation.

“With the Rohingya, if we arrest them, place them in detention and send them back, the outcome is death. That is the reality,” he said.

Sany said enforcement agencies, including the Immigration Department, had conducted numerous operations in the area, but overcrowding at detention centres remained a challenge.

He said that the government spends approximately RM90 per detainee per day to cover food and other necessities, adding that the costs eventually place further strain on public resources.

Sany urged the public to verify information with relevant agencies instead of relying solely on claims circulating online.

He added that several government bodies, including Kajang Municipal Council and the Land Office, had already issued statements on the matter.

“The issue is not as simple as finding out about it today and tearing down the building tomorrow. There are procedures and legal requirements that need to be followed.”

He also stressed that only a handful of families were still living in the vicinity, as reported by local authorities.

He further revealed that the viral footage shared online was old.

At the same time, Sany also called on local communities and village leaders to cooperate with authorities by reporting suspicious activities, while acknowledging the humanitarian dimensions surrounding the Rohingya community.

He warned that the matter carries international implications and could affect Malaysia’s image if mishandled.

Describing the Rohingya issue as a global challenge, he said a long-term and comprehensive solution involving the government and relevant stakeholders was needed, rather than expecting individual constituencies to resolve the matter on their own.
